What NOT to do in the first weeks of college

College is about freedom. Freedom to set your own schedule. Freedom to start making your own decisions. Freedom from your parents.

It can be easy to get carried away when you are finally given the freedom to be yourself. It is important, however, to be careful and avoid making mistakes in the first weeks of college. An arrest today could have a lasting impact on your future.

In the first weeks of college, try to avoid:

  • Drinking and driving: If you get pulled over for drinking and driving, you can lose your license. Even if you refuse a Breathalyzer, you could face serious consequences such as jail time and fines. A DUI conviction will also result in a permanent criminal record. Instead of getting behind the wheel, get a ride from a sober friend, call a cab or get an Uber.
  • Using or selling drugs: "Don't do drugs" is a mantra you have heard time and again. However, the penalties you could face if arrested in possession of drugs can be very serious, especially if you are young. Depending on the type of drugs and amount involved in your case, you could face jail time and fines. You can also get a permanent criminal record, which can follow you for years to come.
  • Bar fights and assaults: When your temper rises and alcohol is involved, a situation can easily spiral out of control. An assault charge for a fight in a bar or with another student, however, can lead to a conviction for assault. This is a violent crime that can lead to a jail sentence and fines.

If you are arrested for any of these types of actions, you could face disciplinary action at your university. It is important to speak with an experienced attorney as soon as possible to help minimize the repercussions after an arrest.
