Sexually explicit pictures in messages can lead to charges

When people think about child pornography charges, they might think of someone who is sitting in front of a computer downloading files that depict young children in sexually explicit acts. While this is one possible scenario that can lead to child pornography charges, it isn't the only one. Some people might not realize that they can face child pornography charges for selfies.

Child pornography charges are possible if a person receives or sends selfies that show sexually explicit photos of people who are minors. This is the case even if the picture in the selfie was sent from the minor who is depicted in the selfie or if you took the picture of the minor.

In some cases, it is possible that one minor who sends a sexually explicit picture of him- or herself to another minor can often face charges for child pornography. This means that if a teenager sends a racy picture to one's boyfriend or girlfriend, he or she might end up facing criminal charges for the selfie.

Selfies are also problematic when they are sent or shared via social media websites or media sharing websites. Even if you weren't the one who shared the selfie in question, you might still face criminal charges if you downloaded it to your computer, cellphone, or any other device because possession of child pornography is against the law.

If you are facing criminal charges for a selfie or other electronic media, you need to learn about your defense options. Learning these options can help you to decide on the necessary decisions at each step of the case.
