Man barred from city council due to drug convictions

It is never a good thing to be charged with a drug crime. It is even worse to be convicted, as this will impact your life now and in the future.

Here is an example of how a drug conviction can change a person's life forever: A 45-year-old man has been barred from taking a seat on the McKeesport City Council because of two drug convictions that occurred more than 20 years ago.

Last November, the man won an open council seat in McKeesport. After winning the primary, he applied for a pardon, however, the process was not complete before he collected enough votes to be named a winner.

He was quoted as saying:

"I was running in a race I wasn't supposed to win ... I showed up to complete my race."

According to news reports, the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office was made aware of two felony drug charges against the man in 1993. This led to the district attorney's office filing a motion to prevent the man from taking the position.

As noted by Pennsylvania Constitution, anyone convicted of an infamous crime, which includes any felony in the state, cannot be elected to any office of trust.

While the man is disappointed in the final outcome, he is not moving forward with the appeal process. Even so, he does plan on remaining politically active.

When a person are convicted of drug crimes in Pennsylvania, they don't often understand what this could mean to their future. It is important to realize the type of impact this can have many years down the road.
