Coach goes to trial after accusations of underage relationship

A 33-year-old man who was the varsity basketball coach for the girls team at Pine-Richland High School has been fired. He is accused of having a sexual relationship with a high school basketball player. The girl in question was just 16 years-old at the time.

The coach is also headed to trial. He had a right to a preliminary hearing, but he decided to waive it. Neither he nor his legal team made any other comment. The man is facing charges for corruption of a minor and institutional sexual assault.

The investigation started due to a phone call from the Allegheny County Department of Human Services' Office of Children, Youth and Families. Someone at the office believed there may be an inappropriate relationship taking place. That led to charges being filed.

According to the girl, the two had known each other for around two or three years. They came in contact because the coach started the Pittsburgh Rise Amateur Athletic Union basketball club, and she started playing for it. That happened roughly one year ago.

She said that much of their relationship was meeting in the early morning and during lunch or talking on the phone about basketball. However, she says that they then struck up a sexual relationship in April, which they kept up until October. Much of this allegedly occurred when they were on trips with the basketball team where they would stay together in hotels.

Those who are facing charges like these in Pennsylvania need to know exactly what their legal rights are. They also need to know about their defense options.
