Collateral consequences can outlive a sentence after conviction

Anyone who has faced criminal charges has probably thought about all the ways that a conviction could change the rest of his or her life. What some people might not realize is that a misdemeanor conviction can often follow them around just as much as a felony conviction.

There is a story about a 61-year-old man who spent seven months homeless because he had a misdemeanor on his criminal history. That misdemeanor cost him affordable housing, which is how he ended up on the street.

Effects like the one in that man's case are known as collateral consequences. Some other collateral consequences can be not being able to own a firearm, not being able to volunteer in certain programs, being denied help from social services agencies, having difficulties with child custody and a host of other consequences.

Of course, some collateral consequences are said to be for public safety. An example would be the ban on felons carrying firearms. Even so, that is a consequence of a conviction that can last your entire life.

We know that thinking about those types of consequences is difficult. One of the best things you can do to try and avoid those types of consequences is to aggressively fight against any criminal charges that are placed against you.

We can help you to learn what options are available in your case. We can help you understand how each option might affect your life now and into the future. Don't sit back and wait on a conviction. Instead, take action that might help you to avoid collateral consequences in the future.
