Stay Safe This "Blackout Wednesday"

We've all heard of Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving and one of the busiest shopping days of the year. But few have heard of Blackout Wednesday, the unofficial name for the day before Thanksgiving.

Thought of by many as the kick-off to the holiday season, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving has become one of the biggest party nights of the year. Why? There are several reasons:

  • First, college students are home for the weekend and ready to get together with old friends.
  • Second, almost everyone has Thanksgiving Day off from work, making it the perfect opportunity to stay up late and hit the bar scene.
  • Third, no one wants to cook the day before Thanksgiving. Instead, people go out to dinner, and while they're dining, they have drinks.

Bars and restaurants are getting ready for the influx of pre-Thanksgiving partiers - and so are local police departments. For the past several years, police throughout Pennsylvania have initiated "Operation Safe Holiday" beginning the day before Thanksgiving. This initiative includes beefed-up patrol efforts and increased DUI checkpoints in an effort to crack down on drunk driving. Drivers can expect the same increase in patrols this year.

There's no need to avoid having a good time over the holidays, just be safe while you are celebrating. Make sure you have a designated driver, or call a cab company if you've had too much to drink.

Happy holidays!
