The rise of cyberbullying

To many people, cyberbullying is one of those Internet crimes that may not sound like much of a big deal. However, it has been traced to very serious consequences in some cases, including suicide on the part of those being bullied. When this happens, it has to be taken quite seriously indeed, and criminal charges could follow.

Cyberbullying can take on many different forms. It could include simply sending mean text messages to someone or harassing them on the phone. People are so connected to their phones these days that the harassment may never stop; with traditional bullying, people could at least escape from it by going to a different location.

Online bullying may also include posting hurtful and insulting messages on social media sites. These often include pictures. Those doing the posting may use fake profiles, thinking this will keep them from being caught, but those profiles can sometimes be traced back to them.

In social media situations, the bullying can become amplified because multiple people can join in on it. This can be overwhelming to the person being targeted, as they are mocked, insulted and belittled.

This isn't to say that social media is a bad thing, not by any means. There are many positive applications. However, it also creates an atmosphere of potential bullying in a way that was never possible before.

It's important to know how this works because people often don't think cyberbullying matters or that it can lead to real-world charges; it feels disconnected. However, as more and more anti-bullying laws are passed, the government does have power to take action in serious cases in Pennsylvania.
