Criminal charges filed against teen in girlfriend's death

Pennsylvania residents are well aware that most relationships have their share of ups and downs. There will be arguments, both small and big. It is for that reason that a significant other is generally the first suspect when a person has been murdered. This appears to be the case for one man in Pennsylvania who now faces criminal charges after being accused of killing his significant other.

A 19-year-old man is being accused of murdering his 18-year-old girlfriend in her college dorm room in Pennsylvania. Although it is not clear how the couple met, they had been dating for almost a year. Their relationship started while she was still in high school.

Reportedly, the boyfriend called 911 and reported that his girlfriend was in cardiac arrest. However, authorities believe something else occurred. A few hours prior to the 911 call, the residential assistant said that he heard noises that he believed sounded like a struggle. He knocked on the girl's door, but no one answered, and he went back to sleep.

An autopsy on the girl showed that she had possibly been strangled and suffered trauma. Authorities say that the boyfriend said that the two got into an argument before the 911 call. He is now facing criminal homicide charges, and no bail was granted.

Regardless of the criminal charges a suspect is facing, anyone who has been accused of a crime has certain legal rights. These rights include a fair trial, a criminal defense and the presumption of innocence. For a conviction to be made, prosecutors in Pennsylvania must prove beyond a reasonable doubt with sufficient evidence that a suspect is guilty of the charges that have been brought against him or her. If such proof cannot be obtained and brought forth, it may be possible for the accused to obtain a dismissal of charges.
